Welcome to Arginium
It is presently the year 4995 of the Common Era.
Welcome to the world of Arginium, central setting of the Chronicles of Arginium. Here one may read up on the background of the people, places and things which make up this magickal and distant place. I hope you enjoy your visit! ^.^
IMPORTANT NOTICE - Some imagery within this wiki is drawn from among artwork devised and kindly created by friends and associates. To them I give considerable thanks, and they all know who they are. Other images, lacking more sufficient representations for my own imaginings of the appearance or design of a place or object, are pulled from TV shows and games I greatly enjoy. These images are used with the implicit understanding that I take no credit for them, and use them only as reference or visualization.

Alchemy is the discipline which focuses on the study of the methods and materials used to produce potions, poisons and other consumables mixtures which can provide a variety of effects to the imbiber. While not limited to their ranks, it is most commonly practiced by arcanists.
Background
Potions and other compounds are brewed from ingredients and imbued with magickal properties. They can be used as medicines, poisons, or give the drinker a variety of effects, from enhanced strength to an immunity to fire. Potions are not necessarily used by drinking, as some can be applied by physical contact. Potions have a distinct advantage over spells in that they can be used even by non-arcanists, provided that they have the potion itself at their disposal. There are also certain magickal effects that can only be induced through the use of potions.
Alchemists require the following supplies and materials in order to practice their craft -
* Cauldron of silver, brass, copper or pewter.
* Phials of crystal or glass.
* Knife of silver or enchanted steel.
* A mortar and pestle, alembic, retort and calcinator.
* Scales for weighing, with weights.
* Varied ingredients necessary for specific results.
* A wand or staff.

The Ambience - also known as the Subliminal Veil - is the name by which the magickal currents of Arginium are known. These energies suffuse the mortal plane and allow the wielding of magick. Those who are able to sense and manipulate these energies - known as arcanists - are said to have "the Gift". The energy of the Ambience presents itself to those with the Gift in different ways - some see unusual colors, some hear a soft humming, some see "ripples" in the air which no other can - but all draw upon it and its energies flow in response to their manipulations. The natural flows of the Ambience manifest occasionally in the form of mana wells - points where the flows burst to the surface of Arginium and appear as shimmering bodies of bluish-white energy that behave as water would. Of these, the most famous is the Harmonious Font, concealed beneath the city of Morvista.

Arcane storms are intense disturbances of a highly magical nature which originate within the Vrucciaven Wastes, near the confluence of the borders between the Northlands, Westlands, and Midlands. Caused by the ongoing bursts of wild magick which come from the ruined Infinite Well which once sat underneath the great fortress-city of Vrucciaven itself, they are very dangerous and unpredictable. At irregular intervals, sufficient amounts of wild magick from the shattered mana well flood the area and interact with the local weather. These potent buildups of uncontrolled magical energy produce fast-moving fronts of arcane lightning and winds, and while they tend to linger over the Wastes, they can expand into neighboring areas with surprising speed.
When an arcane storm is active in an area, it can be seen from considerable distances as a brilliant mass of green and purplish light. There are also strong winds, multi-colored lightning, and the unsettling echoing ambiance that follows the thunderclaps it produces. An arcane storm can blow into an area very quickly, and typically lingers for as little as a few hours or as long as several days. Any non-arcanist who linger in the open during an arcane storm can potentially suffer mana poisoning. Arcanists typically develop headaches and general all-over pain if in proximity to a storm. Sheltering in a building or under a natural structure is usually sufficient to negate risk of excessive exposure to the wild mana bursts of the storm.

Argus Lesandro - born 4960 - is a Human arcanist and member of the Incantrium, holding the rank of adept arcanist. He is the lead member of a team that specializes in studying ancient ruins, such as those at Wupheodran.
Magister Lesandro is considered a prominent citizen of the Grand Commonwealth, in his capacity as a project leader for an arcane order, most notably for his focus on the ongoing efforts to better understand one of the mysterious race that preceded the modern peoples of Arginium.
Background
Early Life
Argus was born and raised in a small, close-knit gentry family in the city of Riverview, in northern Apparona. He is but the most recent in a long line of Lesandros to be an arcanist, and his love of books and writing, combined with his deeply inquisitive and scholarly nature, made him a natural student of the complex methods employed in the ever-expanding fields of Magick. He is an accomplished expert in spellcraft, and is also a skilled alchemist.
The youngest of three and the only son, Argus had a comfortable childhood, learning a variety of skills by the time he was a teenager even as he faced the increasingly challenging tests and tasks of aspiring arcanists. He can fletch arrows, is a competent fisherman, enjoys drawing and is a ravenous reader. He has already contributed copious amounts of information, both empirical and theoretical, to the order's archives on numerous ongoing initiatives, and was largely responsible for the tests that proved that Ashur-cut Oopari crystals were capable of resonating a magickal field of sufficient overcharge for the purposes of arcane teleportation with virtually unlimited range.
Lakeland War
At the age of 22, in mid-4582, Lesandro was one of a detachment who were dispatched by the Incantrium to support the Grand Army response to large-scale troll incursions into Lakeland, in what history remembers as the Lakeland War. Reports of entire villages ravaged and their residents sacrificially butchered had sparked outrage, with the Grand Army and numerous militias sending support. He was active in numerous battles, providing both defensive and offensive magicks in support of the allied troops.
In the Battle of Kensen Field in southern Lakeland, he was captured by trolls who intended to use him as a sacrifice to their pagan spirit gods, hoping to "regain their favor" in their fight against allied forces. While he was ultimately saved by troops who laid siege to the troll war camp he had been taken to, they weren't able to arrive in time to prevent him having his left arm cut off as the first stage of the elaborate ritual the trolls had planned. Rotated behind the front lines, Lesandro was later moved to the Apothecary house in the city of Arlasona, where his wound was tended before arcane engineers crafted him an artificial arm made of magisteel. While fully articulate and lifelike, the arm is still the dull silvery-gray that is the natural color of magisteel.
After the Lakeland War, Lisandro would go on to continue his research into the uses of Oopari crystals. These purplish-white crystals, which grow in formations near mana wells and in Precursor ruins, are a part of his greater interest in the Precursor civilization, which made extensive use of the potent natural magickal source the crystals represent. He has postulated theories in the usage of the crystals for treating injuries and even serious illnesses. These theories are being further explored by Incantrium scholars.
Project Leader
In mid-4992, Lesandro was selected on recommendation from his chapter factor to oversee the study of the Precursor ruin at Wupheodran, located near the coast at the border between the Eastlands and Northlands. He was granted the post of project leader and put in charge of a research team of a dozen fellow arcanists. Of particular interest to the Incantrium within the ruins is the elaborate "fluid map" which has been identified as depicting the entire Continent and surrounding waters. Numerous points of interest - the Great Lighthouse, Zomorah Abyssal, Stormspire and the sunken city ruins of Bergamara, notably - are clearly marked. The map, while providing an extremely detailed topographic view, is made of an unknown fluid substance which holds the shape of the continental mass with amazing accuracy. Touching a portion of the map causes it to reform itself into a detailed localized view of that particular geographical region.
Lesandro has proposed many ideas on the uses the Precursors had for the map, and the value it may have for modern civilization is of growing interest. Whatever else happens with the project, this young magister will likely be at the center of it.
Personal Life
Magister Lesandro is married and has three children - a daughter and two sons. His family resides at a small manor in the Solaris Gardens District of Riverview, and he returns there frequently to spend time with them. Many consider Lesandro "brilliant, dangerously so", as few arcanists as young as he ever ascend to lead an Incantrium project team at a young age. But he is a driven and inquisitive scholar, and his child-like love for his work and creative mind are said to be both a blessing and a curse, and he can be notoriously absent minded and forgetful at times. Some postulate his skill and intensity for his work will either be his greatest asset or his certain undoing.

Arvendon Palace is the official residence and seat of the High Sovereign of the Grand Commonwealth. Located in the heart of Morvista, within what is known as the Palace District, it is the tallest structure in the city, with its highest spires rising more than 500 feet into the air. It is the location of the Sapphire Throne, and where the Court of Elestis meets.
There are approximately 5,000 rooms in the Palace. Among them are many chambers special in some way to State affairs. Some are legendary and well-known all across the entire Continent. These include the Throne Room, the Privy Council chamber, and the Rotunda. Others are less-known but no less singular to some particular purpose or function. These include the Royal Library, the Peacock Hall, the Emerald Hall, and the Royal Gallery. Yet others are important, but may be unheard of or even mere rumor among the citizenry. These obscure (and even legendary) chambers include the Hall of Epochs and the Royal Vaults.

The Bureau of Statistics is the combination internal police force and intelligence arm of the Grand Commonwealth. Thought of a secretive and mysterious agency, the Bureau operates within a cloak of obscuring Royal laws and powerful magickal protections to act - typically behind the scenes and shrouded by great secrecy - against threats to the Commonwealth and its stability.
The Bureau answers only to the High Sovereign, and updates on its activities are presented to the monarch regularly. Reports of its activities and matters of interest are also provided to the Privy Council, as well as to the heads of the Army and Armada. Relevant information is also passed on to the ministers as needed or requested. Likewise, because of their status as heir apparent, the current Prince (or Princess) of Beverneau is likewise provided regular updates on their work.
The Bureau is led by an official known only as the Director. Its field operatives are known simply as agents. While their numbers and disposition are classified, it is known that their headquarters is in the Hall of Royal Register, in the capital city of Morvista.

Chronicles of Arginium is a series of five high fantasy books, set in the fictional world of Arginium, written by American author Tom Brown. The books chronicle the adventures of Lenseph Allidia, a young adept arcanist, and those who travel with him. They were published between TBD and TBD.
* I - Crown in Peril
It is midsummer of the year 4995, and Arginium has enjoyed many long years of relative peace. For four decades, Juliora, High Queen of the Grand Commonwealth, has held her vast realm together through a combination of political savvy and subtle manipulation. From the orcs in the north to the elves in the west, her name invokes a sense of royal power and serene constancy, and she is recognised as one of the greatest monarchs ever to sit the Sapphire Throne.
But a sinister conspiracy with deep, ancient roots lingers like a malign backdrop to this era of calm. A shadowy player on the field of Continental politics, believing themselves grossly wronged by the queen's ancestors and in command of a deadly network of supporters, works in secret to bring down the Royal House of Galienno. This conspiracy will go to any length to ensure that the queen, and those who would succeed her, are erased from existence, their bloodline forever destroyed.
This dark secret is stumbled upon by Lenseph Allidia, an up and coming arcanist who knows nothing of his past. It falls upon him, and those who will come to his aid, to expose this wicked design before it can be brought to fruition. He will be challenged everywhere he turns, facing off against agents of the conspiracy itself, and struggling to reveal the truth in the face of skepticism from his own superiors and the queen's advisers. In spite of the difficulties facing him, Lenseph and his companions must press on, as every day the evil remains hidden, the Crown falls into ever deeper peril.
* II - Wayfarer's Lament
* III - Voice from the Isles
* IV - Chains of the Deep
* V - Terrace of the Gods
Even as mid-year 4999 is celebrated, the ominous portents of the prophecy regarding the year 5000 dwells in the back of everyone's mind. In spite of everything he has faced up to this point, Magister Allidia finds himself again confronting a fresh threat to the stability of the realm he calls home - the leader of the Incantrium has fallen ill, and is feared to be dying. With this tragedy as a backdrop, the ancient arcane order begins to fray at its edges, with some members advocating a more aggressive presence in Continental affairs in the face of their leader's fragile condition and the subsequent loosening of her usually strict grasp. Opposing them are those magisters who insist the order must remain neutral, serving both the Commonwealth and its citizens.
The looming schism is compounded by the revelation that the leader of the more militant magisters is seeking information on the whereabouts of one of the most legendary sites in all the world - the mythical Terrace of the Gods,

The Church of the Circle is the dominant religious organisation in Arginium. It spreads the teachings of the Communion of the Circle, the pre-eminent religion of mortal society. It is the official state religion of the Grand Commonwealth.
Adherents of the religion are known as the Circlers. This term is also used to refer to the collective body of clerics within the Church.
History
Rise of mortals...the Exemplars...the empire of Delthoridan...collapse of the Empire...greater freedom & expansion...modern times...heresies.
Attitudes
Acolytes of the Church are trained to be vigilant in carrying out their duties. In their service they learn to never betray the trust bestowed upon them, and to be careful to maintain the good relations between the Church and the people. Ordained members of the Church are respected and shown reverence wherever they go, and they use the goodwill of their hard-earned reputation to be a force for compassion and mercy in Commonwealth society.
Practices
The teachings of the Church are passed on through weekly worship gatherings and readings of their holy scriptures, as well as studies of past religious works and the men and women hailed as best representing the values of the Communion. Private groups of family and friends, and sometimes groups in a neighborhood, will gather to read scriptures and meditate on their meaning.
Hierarchy
The Church maintains a simple, clear-cut hierarchy of titles and positions. These titles are -
* The Curate is the elected leader of the Church and its foremost representative in the Commonwealth. This individual is selected from among qualified candidates by the Church’s governing council upon the passing of the previous office holder, and they serve for life. The present holder of this office is Danucian Carimalo.
* Prelates are the leaders of the religion and the Church, and are its senior, fully ordained clerics. They are commonly appointed to preside over a specific area within the Commonwealth, and typically are the custodians of the great chapels in major towns and cities. The most senior clerics of this rank are also members of the Prelate Assembly, which assists the Curate in governing the Church.
* Deacons are the most common rank within the Church. They have completed their formal studies, and are recognized by the Assembly to perform various religious ceremonies, including marriages and funerals. They also conduct regular religious services and are commonly the custodians of smaller chapels.
* Acolytes are those young men and women who aspire to join the Church and are pursuing formal religious studies in the chapels and shrines of the religion. They are not formally part of the Church, but are regarded as "preparatory members". They are tasked with performing many of the ceremonial duties of the places of worship where they reside, and also assist deacons and prelates with their duties. It is typical for acolytes, in addition to their studies, to participate in the processional and recessional at various ceremonies, in certain circumstances presenting various religious symbols and artifacts. They also light candles and maintain watch over the chapels and shrines where they work.
Equipment
Dress
Ordained members of the Church wear a hooded alb of slate blue linen, under which they wear a simple white tunic, black pants, and black leather shoes. The cuffs of a deacon's sleeves have no detailing, but those of a prelate will have an intricate brocade pattern in white thread. Deacons wear a black band cincture, while prelates wear a white cincture. Only the outer vestments of the Curate differ - they wear a white hooded alb with a red band cincture and red chasuble. A cleric only wears their hood up when outdoors.
Ornaments
Members of the clergy, like the congregants themselves, carry a set of prayer beads. They are commonly made out of wood, ceramic, or ivory. Most commonly, these will be looped around the believer's wrist, worn throughout a typical day and readily accessible.

The Circle Celestial is the name given to the pantheon of gods who are the focus of worship within the Communion of the Circle, the pre-eminent religion of Arginium.
Description
The Circle is described as the pantheon of fourteen omnipotent, infinite beings who forged and sustain Creation. Belief teaches that mortals can have a true and personal knowledge of the Gods, but this does not mean it is possible to understand Them. The Venerable Codex is clear that the Gods are ultimately incomprehensible to the mortal mind; that is, nobody can ever fully comprehend Them in Their entirety. This belief not only refers to Their very existence, but to their attributes — power, thoughts, ways, wisdom, and judgments — as well. They exist at the beginning and the end of time simultaneously, outside of time and space proper.
The Gods
None of the Gods have ever been named, as it is considered blasphemous to personalise divinity. They are described as the arbiters of perfect balance, sustaining all facets of existence and ensuring that Their commandments and laws are obeyed. The Gods are not gendered, as it is believed that such a descriptor is something to which the Divine cannot be proscribed.
* God of Law & Time
* God of War & the Hunt
* God of Trade & Commerce
* God of Healing & Medicine
* God of Hearth & Family
* God of Knowledge & Magick
* God of Agriculture & the Harvest
* God of Nature & Weather
* God of Crafts & Industry
* God of the Cycle of Life
* God of Love & Beauty
* God of Travel & Exploration
* God of Mercy & Charity
* God of Secrets & Mysteries
Servants
Just as the forces of darkness dwell within Anathema, the Gods command legions of angelic beings known simply as the Immortals. Not of the material plane, these powerful beings serve as intermediaries between the Gods and Creation. Over the centuries, these emissaries of the Gods have appeared to mortals, giving them everything from cautious words of warning to aid in dire times. Numerous occasions are detailed in history where it is believed that Immortals sent by the Gods carried out their will in a variety of ways.
Within the ranks of the Immortals, a small group known as the Watchers are said to be the most powerful, and act as the lieutenants of the Gods. Rarely if ever do they make an appearance on the material plane, but when they do, the matter at hand is most serious. Tales persist within recorded history of a mysterious being known only as the Inquisitor, said to be one of the most powerful of the Watchers, who is sent in special circumstances to assess matters which have drawn Divine attentions (or Divine wrath) prior to judgment being passed. One of the most prominent mentions of the Inquisitor came on the advent of the destruction of the ancient port city of Silverport, which was consumed by the sea in an unnatural storm nearly two thousand years ago.

The Communion of the Circle - also known simply as the Communion - is the religion followed by the vast majority of the peoples of Arginium. The religion is promoted and preserved by the prelates of the Church of the Circle, and is the official state faith of the Grand Commonwealth.
Beliefs
The Communion is centered around and gets its name from its worship of the Circle Celestial, the pantheon of gods - none have ever been named, as it is considered a blasphemy of the highest order to attempt to personalise the Divine - who are the center of the religion and its worship. Its main belief is that there is no path to salvation but through trust and belief in the Gods, and that it is up to every person to be a force for good in society. The teachings of the Communion revolve around community, compassion, and self discipline, emphasizing the individual as a potential agency of good and stressing how each person can contribute to society. Every choice helps to forge the individual path (and ultimate fate) of one's immortal soul, and the Communion encourages the vital importance of kindness and community in making life better for all.
The Communion first took root among mortals after the Gods spoke to their first prophet - the Exemplar Dionel - at Cedorian, a hill in Prousia Riding of Ginniodell Province. What started out as the site of the first place of worship dedicated to the Circle is now the Shrine of Reverence - where Dionel was brutally murdered by an Ousni fanatic fifty-four years later.
All mortals are faced daily with choices. These choices create a singular path which influences the fate of their soul. While past deeds cannot themselves be undone, future ones can alter the path of a person’s destiny. No one but the individual can make the choices that determine their fate, and these choices can not only determine their fate, but affect the well-being of their community and those around them.
The central tenets of the Communion are inculcated in the Venerable Codex, compiled from the teachings of the Exemplars, prophets who were inspired by the Gods to spread these teachings and the religion itself.
Five Tenets
The Communion is built upon five core tenets -
* All of Creation is in a constant search for balance and peace. Anathema will seek to tempt us away from these goals.
* Our choices affect our path, and our ultimate fate.
* The Gods are beyond our understanding, but our prayers and pursuit of belief bring us closer to Them.
* Our daily works can make all the difference to the betterment of society.
* Redemption is the choice of every person.
Holy Texts
The Communion has three holy texts which it uses to preserve and spread its teachings. Each one serves a specific purpose within the Church’s works.
The first, and most important, is the Venerable Codex, the central holy text of the Communion. It contains the full teachings passed down by the Exemplars. Each chapter - there are twenty-one in total - contains the sermons and teachings of a single Exemplar, and focuses on a central theme. Each of the prophets focused their teachings on some key aspect of life, work, or personal conduct, and passed these lessons down for posterity.
The Keeper Testament is a text penned by Exemplar Dionel himself shortly before he was murdered. In it, Dionel tells the story - as he was inspired to do - of what is known as the “Ordering of the Infinite”, the events which saw the creation of all things and the structuring of the Primordial Infinite by the Gods in the time before time.
The Scrolls of Tranquility are a set of six scrolls written by the Exemplar Kalanil - an elven prophet of the Communion - who penned them as inspirational, meditative works designed to explore the importance of emotional and spiritual clarity in the pursuit of greater enlightenment. The Scrolls became the inspiration for the creation of the three monastic societies affiliated with the Church - the Order of the Tranquil Hand, the Order of the Immaculate Veil, and the Order of the Exalted Task.
The Circle Celestial
The Communion worships a divine pantheon known as the Circle Celestial. In the time before time, They descended from Aesenium, the realm of light, to bring order and structure to the chaotic formlessness of the Primordial Infinite, shaping its limitless worlds and stars and wonders. They is the source all which both forged and now sustains Creation. According to the Venerable Codex, the Gods have always been, with no discernible beginning or end. They see and know all, guide the course of all things, and are the power which sustains the laws governing all aspects of the orderly Creation known to all mortal beings.
The Communion teaches that the Gods tolerate the existence of the forces of Anathema as a tragic necessity in the natural cycle of mortal life, as both a teaching tool and as a test of the resolve of people to choose for themselves. Many faithful believe that the previous epochs of history were similarly tested and failed, which is why Anathema persists. It is said that, in a time when They determine appropriate, the Circle will purge the forces of darkness from Creation and all peoples will know eternal peace and tranquility.
The Anathema
The Circle was (and still is) opposed in its works by the dark forces of “Anathema”. A dark font of evil and depravity, from depths of Eaphunara, the realm of darkness, come the demons and fiends forged of those dark fires to bring fear and disorder to Creation. In the beginning times, divine servitors swept demonic opposition aside as Creation came into being, but the taint of Anathema tragically remains, its dark influences sowing the seeds of unrest and ill feelings among the mortal races. To modern time, Anathema represents evil, darkness, temptation, and avarice, among other negative traits. Some hidden cults worship the Anathema as the true divine power, but these are branded heretical and hunted aggressively by Church examiners and Royal authority alike.
Structure
The Church of the Circle, charged by the Gods with preserving the teachings passed on by the Exemplars and promoting its tenets throughout the land, has a simple hierarchy that represents different tiers of authority and service. There are three ranks of clergy within its structure - the Curate, the Prelates, and the Deacons. At the pinnacle of this hierarchy is the Curate, who serves as leader and foremost representative of the Church. There is only one cleric of this rank at any given time. Under their authority are the Prelates, who are the senior clerics. They can be found leading the basilicas and great chapels of major cities and other important areas. The most senior prelates constitute the membership of the Prelate Assembly, the council which advises and assists the Curate in governance of the Church, and which elects a new Curate upon the passing of the current one. Lastly are the Deacons, who serve as junior clerics. They lead chapels in the many towns and villages and attend the spiritual needs of of local congregants, as well as supporting charitable and outreach efforts in a community. All who seek to become clerics spend several years as acolytes, studying at the Church's seminary, the Scuola Divinica.

Danucian Carimalo - born 4920 CE - is a Human cleric, and the current Curate of the Church of the Circle. He has served in this capacity since mid-4982.
He is known formally as His Holiness the Reverend Father Danucian Carimalo, Curate of the Church of the Circle.
A native of the town of Pinehaven in central Wayland Province, he is the middle of five children of a local merchant family, with two brothers older and a brother and sister younger than him. As of 4993, he is the last living of his siblings.
Father Carimalo began studies at the Scuola Divinica in Chamden Parish in 4939, and completed them in 4945, when he was ordained a deacon and assigned to the chapel in his hometown of Pinehaven. After serving in this capacity for a little over a decade, he was elevated to prelate in 4956, and reassigned to the great chapel in the city of Bellstar. He would become a member of the Prelate Assembly in 4978, quickly rising to prominence as one of the most respected moderate voices on the council. In 4982, he was elected Curate after it was made known to the Assembly that his predecessor had written in her last testament that he was her favoured successor.
As Curate of the Church, he is the personal spiritual advisor of High Queen Juliora. His predecessor, the Reverend Mother Terennia Aretad, served as Curate from late-4959 to mid-4982, when she passed away at the age of 81.

Elves are one of the four civilized races native to Arginium.
Overview
History
During the First Age, elves branched away from the ancient Vai and began to build their own culture and society over the successive centuries. As the Vai began to die off and their birth rate plummeted - an intentional situation devised by the Precursors, it is believed - the elves supplanted them as the prevalent race of the Continent.
In the early years of the Second Age, the empire of Delthoridan was established. It directly controlled the Westlands and the majority of the Midlands, and heavily influenced much of the rest of the world via a network of satraps. In this period, the other civilised races first appeared. The Humans spent the imperial period as labourers and farmers, their homeland in the controlled by imperial puppets that governed satraps within the Eastlands. The origins of the Orcs are more shrouded in mystery, but the two most popular legends of their origins intertwine them with the elves - one story claims they are the product of a curse placed upon a group of elves as punishment from the ancestors, while the other suggests they were twisted by experiments by arcanists of the now-illegal society known as the Pale Tower, who experimented upon prisoners of the servitor races while under the influence of Anathema.
When the Elven Civil War brought down the empire and the majority of elves were slain in the conflict, humans were by far the most organised of the other civilised races, and as such rose swiftly in the following centuries to take their place as the preeminent race of the Continent. It is estimated in current year that approximately 15% of the population of the Grand Commonwealth is elven.
Description
Elves vary in height and build, but are always taller than humans or orcs. Males average between 5’10” and 6'7” in height and mass between 190 and 250 pounds, depending on height. Females average between 5'6" and 6’ in height and mass between 150 and 180 pounds, depending on height. Their hair colour varies, and can be shades of copper, bronze, or black. Their eyes colour also varies, and can be shades of green or gold. Their skin is almost universally light reddish shades.
Magick ability in elves is much more common than the other races, with 1 in 500 having the ability to wield it. Magick is highly revered in elven society, but their near extinction after the Elven Civil War has seen them adopt a more cautious outlook. All the same, those elves are capabable of wielding magick have a tendency to look down on those who don't, viewing them as being "inferior". Elves, on average, live upwards of 400 years.
Reputation
Elves are renowned as some of the world's most skilled marksmen, and as highly talented arcanists. They are likewise acclaimed as artists, musicians, and are experts in naturalist pursuits. They were initially highly resistant to the campaign to absorb their lands into the Commonwealth, but assurances of no campaigns to purge elven kind from the Continent and a guarantee they’d be permitted to worship freely their own faith ultimately helped negotiate their inclusion.
Society
A complex hierarchy binds the various elven houses together, and an ever-shifting structure of wealth and rank influences everything. Societal competition is a cornerstone of the elven culture, and some elves spend their entire lives advancing the interests of their house. This complexity is well-known to the Commonwealth, and a special group within the Foreign Office, the Western Affairs Section, is dedicated entirely to monitoring these shifts, and to maintaining the state’s relationship with the elven people.
The vast majority of elves who are religious worship the Circle Celestial of the Communion of the Circle. A small minority continue to maintain the ritualistic traditions of the Way of the Ancestors, which venerates the spirits of their ancestors, and predated the first Exemplars. Their largest settlement is the city of Ormindy Do (population 21,700), located in the central Westlands.

Faldra are one of the nine civilized races native to Arginium.
Background
Physical Description
Faldra stand slightly shorter than Human males. They are best identified by their hooved feet, the furry lower bodies and the wild, dark hair on their heads from which a small pair of horns protrude. Their upper bodies and facial structure would allow them to pass for Humans were it not for the varied coloration of their skin, which can be combinations of pale blue and green hues as well as orange and gold. Males tend to be wiry and muscular, while the females are more lithe and slender. They are one of the fastest races where running is concerned.
History
TBD
Culture
The Faldra are open-minded, friendly and very outgoing people. They make for exceptional entertainers and musicians, and were responsible for the design and creation of several of the wind and string instruments of modern society. They live in clans which share a common name - usually in reference to an object or feature near their home - but otherwise have simple given names. They worship their own take on Temprus, calling Him the "Great Tender", venerating His gifts of the bounty of the natural world.

The Four Families are a prominent organisation with activities across the Continent. Publicly a cartel of four powerful merchant families whose trades work in loose concert, privately they are a formidable criminal organisation with many interests across the Continent. There is little known history of the organisation's beginnings, but it is said to have been around for centuries.
Overview
Leadership
Each of the Four Families is predominated at its highest levels of leadership by actual blood members of the four respective houses. The leaders of each of the four families is known as the "Boss". In the case of each of the Families, the boss can inherit his or her position from their predecessor upon their death or retirement. The occasional violent transition has been known to happen. Within each family, the Boss holds full authority to arbitrate issues between members, to guide the business of the family, and to select his lieutenants. The Boss and his lieutenants each have the responsibility to enforce order and discipline among their men, and negligence and insubordination are harshly dealt with.
Membership
Any man or woman of majority - aged sixteen years - can be a prospective candidate for initiation. They must not be related by blood or marriage to any member of the family to which they seek to pledge their service, and cannot be related to or have any close links with law officers or members of the judiciary. Each prospect is carefully tested to demonstrate their obedience, discretion and skill. In almost all situations, the ultimate test of their sincerity is their willingness to commit a murder which they are ordered to carry out. The act of murder both proves their willingness to obey and binds them to silence.
Regular members of the families are treated as if they were "adopted" into the family. This both gives them the prestige of service to that house and the protection their name and influence can bring if they are wronged by any opposed to them.
Member Houses
House of Alexine
Natives of Fiovogana in the Southlands, the House of Alexine is most prominent for its trades in ores, sugar, horses and timber.
House of Gunnbjorn
Natives of Enneron in the Northlands, renowned for its trades in fine spices and oils, beers, and weaponry.
The present leader of the family is TBD.
House of Lianno
Natives of Apparona in the Eastlands, the House of Lianno has built its wealth trading in glass, ivory, livestock and wines.
The present leader of the family is Amantius Lianno.
House of TBD
Natives of TBD in TBD, very successful as traders active in the fabric and fragrance markets.
The Commonwealth
The criminal activities of the Families are known to the Commonwealth, and its intelligence apparatus, but its spymasters typically look the other way, trading the tolerance of the High Sovereign and the Privy Council for certain assistance when needed. In exchange, the Families avoid interference with State properties and business and the State refrains from moving to purge the families, or worse. The family's peace with the State and the collaboration they occasionally share is an agreement known simply to those aware of its existence as "the Silence".

The Grand Commonwealth is the nation state which unites all of Arginium under its banner. Considered a spiritual successor state of the Three Empires, it is the largest and most powerful state in the history of Arginium. It’s citizens are known as Commonwealthers. Its capital is the metropolis of Morvista, located in the heart of the western Midlands.
History
TBD
Government
Central
The central governing apparatus of the Commonwealth is split into three entities, each with distinct responsibilities and powers - the High Sovereign, the Privy Council, and the Grand Ministry.
At its pinnacle, the state is led by the High Sovereign, who holds vast powers, and rules absolutely. They serve for life, and their leadership fulfills a variety of critical functions. The history of the Commonwealth has seen high sovereigns who were strong and others who were weak. The present leader of the Commonwealth is High Queen Juliora.
Assisting in the rule of the Commonwealth are the lords and ladies of the Privy Council, a body whose membership is drawn from the aristocracy. Nominations are requested on the passing of a sitting member, and the councilors vote on a replacement from among these nominees. Whenever a member is known to be in poor health, one will see much politicking by nobles who seeking a seat on the Council. This politicking can be a moot effort, however, as ultimately only the High Sovereign has final say over those who gain or lose a seat on the Council, and their own decision making doesn't always pay heed to the opinions or efforts of others.
The bureaucracy, known as the Grand Ministry, is comprised of the various offices, bureaus, and commissions which fulfill the various administrative and regulatory functions of the Commonwealth. These include diplomacy, the military, commerce, and various trade and monetary matters. It consists of the following agencies -
* Offices
** Foreign
** War
** Navy
** Tax
** Excise
** Survey
** Works
* Bureaus
** of Commerce
** of Provisioning
** of Public Records
** of Weights & Measures
** of Ordnance
** of Statistics
* Commissions
** for Labour & Welfare
** for the Protection of Special Sites
** for Trade & Navigation
* Proctor, Prefect, Advocate, Docent, Arbiter
* Exchange Hall
Local
The Commonwealth as a whole is separated into forty-one duchies, which are synonymous with the provinces. Each is governed by a duke (or duchess). The provinces are divided into a varying number of counties, governed by a count (or countess). These counties, in turn, are divided into ridings, each of which is governed by a baron (or baroness). Each rank of noble lord (or lady) is answerable to the next senior person in the hierarchy, and all are answerable to the High Sovereign at any time.
Within each riding is a differing number of municipalities - cities, towns, and villages. Each of these has an elected mayor and council of aldermen which maintains local leadership. They are aided in their governance by a group of administrative officials - a registrar who manages the birth and death records as well as deeds and licenses, an assessor who coordinates tax and excise collections, and a clerk of works who heads the crews that maintain the highways, bridges, dams and other vital structures in the area.
Every municipality has its own sheriff who oversees a dedicated force of law officers charged with keeping the peace. In an emergency situation, any municipality call upon the nearest Grand Army or provincial militia garrison for help.
Military
The military forces of the Commonwealth are divided between the Grand Army and the Grand Armada. These are commanded by the captain general and lord high admiral, respectively.
The Army, at present, consists of forty-three brigades, each commanded by a brigadier and consisting of 4,800 troops each. Three brigades are permanently stationed at forts near Morvista as a permanent capital defence force. The remainder are divided into eight army groups of five brigades each, with every group being assigned to one of eight geographic areas within the four continental regions. These forces maintain highway patrols, support local militia and constabularies as required, and keep the peace.
The Navy, at present, maintains thirty six squadrons, each commanded by a commodore and consisting of twelve ships each. These vessels patrol the coasts and deep waterways of the continent, protecting shipping and the port cities. The squadrons are grouped into six fleets of twelve squadrons each, and each assigned to one of the six great port metropolises of the Commonwealth.
The Army rank structure, from most senior to most junior, is as follows - General, Brigadier, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Corporal, and Trooper.
The Navy rank structure, from most senior to most junior, is as follows - Admiral, Commodore, Captain, Lieutenant, Petty Officer, Leading Deckhand, and Deckhand.
Economy
The economy of the Commonwealth is extensive and robust. A wide range of trade-friendly policies have been maintained by its leadership since its founding. This, combined with a sensible relationship with the trade guilds, have nurtured what has become one of the single wealthiest states in continental history.
Society
The official state religion of the Commonwealth is the Communion of the Circle, as represented and spread by the efforts of the clerics of the Church of the Circle.
Social Structure
The social structure of the Commonwealth centers around a system known as the "honourable order".
* Royalty - High Sovereign, their spouse, their children and grandchildren.
* Aristocracy - Dukes, counts, barons and their families.
* Knights- All oathsworn and anointed members of the knightly orders.
* Clergy - Clerics of the Church who have taken the orders.
* Merchants - All traders, merchants, and other business people.
* Commoners - All common working folk.
Measurements
The Great Lighthouse - also known as the Lighthouse at Praxegos - is a massive Precursor structure found on Praxegos Island, located at the southeasterly end of the string of rocky islands known as the Codus Islands. It is one of the prominent sites of Arginium.
The age of the Lighthouse is unknown, but its architecture is of the same style as other Precursor structures that still dot the Continent. From its base to the pinnacle of its light, the structure stands approximately 3,500 feet high. On the evening of every new full moon, the massive lamp at the pinnacle of the Lighthouse sends out a multi-colored beam of light that reflects in the skies above and can be seen across the entire Continent.
First discovered by explorers in the year 491 of the Common Era, every attempt that has ever been made to gain access to the Lighthouse has failed, as no way has been devised to open the towering doors that are the only apparent means of entry. The doors and outer walls deflect magical spells, and scrying the interior produces nothing. Scholars of the Incantrium who visited the site report they sense potent magicks at work within the structure, but have had no more luck than anyone else in gaining access.
The purpose of the Lighthouse, similarly, remains unknown, but scholars continue to study what of it they can. Some theorize there is a connection between the Lighthouse, the Zomorah Abyssal and the legends of the Precursor city of Ionorath. The Incantrium maintains a small enclave on the opposite end of the Codus Islands, on the island known as Eovotara.

Halflings are one of the four civilized races native to Arginium.
Overview
History
During the Second Age, halflings were a servitor race of the elven empire of Delthoridan.
When the Elven Civil War brought down the empire and the majority of elves were slain in the conflict, humans rose quickly to supplant their former masters as the new leaders of the Continent. Having also been servitors, the halfling people were able to adapt to the changes, and to modern times continue to live alongside humans freely in the cities, towns, and villages across Arginium. It is estimated in current year that approximately 15% of the population of the Grand Commonwealth is halfling.
Description
Halflings vary in height and build, but are always shorter than the other races. Males and females alike average between 2’10” and 3'6” in height and mass between 35 and 45 pounds, depending on their height. Their hair colour varies, and can be shades of black, brown, blonde, or red. Their eyes colour also varies, and can be shades of blue, green, or brown . They tend to be fairer skinned than humans.
Magick ability in halflings is rare, with only 1 in 1,000 being born with the ability to wield it. Many among their society find magick frightening for its seemingly limitless capacities, but they know better than to not respect what it is capable of. This respect manifests itself in the more somber and cautious nature of their kind who are acanists. Halflings, on average, live upwards of 65 years.
Reputation
Halflings are very social and outgoing folk, who get along easily with the other races. Their earnestness and openness make them easily at home among the other civilised races, and their willingness to help other people as much as their own kind. In some cases, the very extroverted nature of halfling society can rub others wrong, of course, but they nevertheless are widely welcomed throughout Commonwealth communities. They are widely known as intensely curious people, with a penchant for collecting things, and have made a name for themselves as scouts, explorers, tinkerers, and sharpshooters.
Society
Like humans, halflings are family-oriented people to whom community is everything. They organize in stims that are named for the area in which they live, and resemble both neighborhoods within a greater community and an all-inclusive extended family. These stims encompass all halflings who live in an area, and even if they are not related by blood, they all are considered family by tradition. Halflings within any given stim refer to themselves and others in that community as "stimfolk", and these very close-knit structures work actively in preserving their homes, their livelihoods, and one another.
Halflings are almost equally split between those who are and aren't religious. Those who are religious are typically followers of the Communion of the Circle, the state faith of the Commonwealth.

Hieronymus Berrana - born 4953 as Hieronymus Lianno - is a Human cleric and prelate in the service of the Church of the Circle in Worlmarch Province.
Father Berrana is considered a prominent citizen of the Continent, in his capacity as the leader of one of its parishes, and as a teacher and practitioner of the faith.
Background
Berrana was born and grew up in Egredore in the Midlands, in an outlying village of the great city of Eastgate. He was the eldest of six and only son of his master stonemason father and mother who was a healer. He remembers his youth as a time of simple ways but also of contentment, benefitting from the peace of a quiet region of the Continent and the modest but honest means his parents work brought. As the eldest child, he was both the one most made an example of as a lesson to the younger, but also the one to whom the younger children looked for guidance and inspiration when their parents were away.
Berrana was accepted at the age of 17 into the Scuola Divinica and took to his lessons well. He found he enjoyed the study and writing of the rites, and was sent aged 21 into Worlmarch as deacon of the Odomond chapel. He maintained this position until he was selected to replace the retiring prelate nine years later. He has built a reputation for dedication to the scriptures of the faith and a patient, compassionate manner with his parishioners.
Father Berrana is married and has a son and daughter.
Past
Father Berrana is not himself aware of it, but his family name is actually not Berrana at all, but Lianno. He is the younger of two sons, and middle child, of Amantius Lianno, one of the bosses of the Four Families, the powerful criminal cartel. As a youth, he had worked as a clerk in his father's office at the family business, Lianno Mercantile, in Eastgate. His future was altered when faced with a crisis of conscience after overhearing his elder brother Arvell discussed his plans for a heist against a powerful banking family in Eastgate. Having grown up thinking his family merely successful merchants, he was shocked to learn they were one of the most influential criminal cartels in the Commonwealth.
After Hieronymus quietly reported the intended heist to the constabulary, his father found out. Despite his actions, Amantius refused to take the traditional route in dealing with his younger son, the snitch. He could not simply let the matter go at that, however, as others of the family were wanting Hieronymus punished, and the Lenonage family was angry at the "failure" of their agreement. Thus, he opted to have him quietly put out of sight, on the pretense he had his son "dealt with." Calling in a favor with the Incantrium, he had Hieronymus' memory wiped one evening while he slept and replaced with fabricated remembrances of a totally different life, and had him placed in the seminary. As if he had always been there, Hieronymus excelled in his lessons and was made an anointed cleric of the Church in due course. He has since been devoted to the works of the Faith, unaware of his true familial origins.
His father makes an anonymous donation every year at New Annum of a hundred gold pieces to the chapel at Odomond. While his identity has never been determined, the generous gift enables the chapel to more than sustain its local charity and outreach, and they don’t feel it wise to question such generosity when it can provide so much assistance.

This page contains the general historical account of events within Arginium since the beginning of time.
Antiquity Era
* Arginium and the rest of the Great Beyond form under Divine guidance. The Precursors are first placed upon the world.
* Very little definitive history is known of this era, or how long it lasted. During this period, the Precursors built several great cities whose ruins still stand today. The dragons were created, and the Ancients tapped into the magicks of the land by developing the mana wells, most famously the Well of Harmony and the Infinite Well.
* The peoples of Arginium are believed to have at some point during the latter part this era descended from the Ancients. The coming of these peoples is believed to have been the point at which the Precursors began to depart the realm.
Common Era
First Age
* Vrucciaven is established in the early years of this Age.
* Emaonach ascends to power fifteen years before the Downfall.
* In his sixth year, Emaonach and his arcanists violate the Sacred Ordinances, summoning demons from Eaphunara.
* The destruction of Vrucciaven (the Downfall) marks the end of this Age.
Second Age
* The elven empire of Delthoridan is established in the early years of this age.
* The World Tree begins to bloom again in the Great Forest in the twenty-ninth year.
* The frigate Zomorah takes the first sounding of the Zomorah Abyssal.
* The first recorded sighting of the Leviathan is reported by a ship passing over the Abyssal nine years later.
* The collapse of Delthoridan marks the end of this Age.
* The last dragon sighting occurs shortly after the collapse of Delthoridan, just north of the ruins of Ioxonor.
Third Age
* The Great Lighthouse is first discovered.
* The Incantrium is established.
Fourth Age
* 4202 - The Grand Commonwealth is formed.
* 4582 - The Lakeland War occurs mid-year.
* 4995 - Current year.

The House of the Gods - known in the Orcish tongue as Gholorz Garan'do - is the religion of the Orcish people.
Beliefs
Gholorz is centered around the reverence of a trinity of gods, also known as the Gholorz, who represent death (Sazotz), fortune (Uthos), and war (Khaorr). It is believed by orcs that these three deities are in a constant struggle for supremacy over orcish society, and that the prayers and offerings of individual orcs to them sustain this struggle, which symbolizes the struggle of life and the three parts of it considered most important to every orc - battle against one's foes, prosperity and fortune in success, and inevitably death, which comes for every orc.
Holy Texts
Gholorz has no formal texts, as all beliefs and practices it are passed down by oral tradition. This tradition requires what are known as lorekeepers, elder orcs whose purpose in society is to maintain this knowledge and pass it on to younger orcs who seek to likewise preserve the faith.
Structure
Gholorz maintains no priests or temples, as adherence to the faith is the duty of every individual orc. The closest thing to clergy within the faith are the lorekeepers, who maintain the knowledge of the faith and pass it on via oral instruction to new groups of willing supplicants, who continue the tradition to future generations.
Status
The religion is considered a minority one, as only a small number of orcs (mainly among the more militant, independent tribes) continue to follow it. It being a minority faith, it is protected by Commonwealth law, though its aggressive ethnocentric views make it unpopular among those orcs who prefer to be a part of Continental society and not isolated. The religion has no known relationship with any others.

Humans are one of the four civilized races native to Arginium.
Overview
History
During the Second Age, humans were a servitor race within the Elven empire of Delthoridan, which ruled over much of the Midlands and the Westlands. They weren’t allowed to study Magick under rules which also applied to halflings who lived in the empire, and were forbidden to travel without permit.
When the Elven Civil War brought down the empire and the majority of elves were slain in the conflict, humankind rose in the following centuries to take their place as the preeminent race of the Continent. It is estimated in current year that approximately 60% of the population of the Grand Commonwealth is human.
Description
Humans vary in height and build. Males average between 5'8" and 6'4" in height and mass between 165 and 220 pounds, depending on height. Females average between 5'0" and 5'6" in height and mass between 120 and 145 pounds, depending on weight. Their hair colour varies, and can be shades of brown, blonde, red, or black. Their eyes colour also varies, and can be shades of blue, green, or brown. Their skin is light or gold beige shades.
Magick ability in humans is rare, with only 1 in 1,000 being born with the ability to wield it. Many common folk are intimidated by the concept, but a general sense of universal respect for the mysterious powers Magick grants is prevalent among the social classes. Humans, on average, live upwards of 80 years.
Reputation
Humans are known as some of the world's most skilled diplomats, swordsmen, and as capable arcanists and explorers. The militant aspects of their culture are widely known through their penchant for efficiency and ruthless effectiveness. This has been proven in the success they had in uniting the entirely of the Continent under the banner of the Commonwealth nearly 800 years ago. They are likewise known for their agility and adaptability.
Society
Highly community oriented, humans build their lives around family and friends, and are typically very social, among their own kind and with the other civilised races. Older men and women are shown deference and respect, as elders of the community. Frequently, their advice will be sought on matters that affect the town or village, and they consider it an obligation of their status to teach and counsel younger generations.
Since the pre-Delthoridan days, like most mortals, Humans have worshiped the Circle Celestial.

The Incantrium - also sometimes called the Guild of Incanters - is an arcane guild, operating throughout the Grand Commonwealth, dedicated to the study, responsible use, and protection of magick. It operates under an official charter from the Commonwealth.
Overview
Mission
The Incantrium is charged with the promotion and preservation of Magick, and is dedicated to the study and application of the arcane arts. It also serves to centralize standards and teachings, and advocates the responsible use of these powers. It seeks those it learns of who have experienced their Unbinding, approaches the family with an offer of instruction, and ensures that they are fully and responsibly taught the proper respect and caution for wielding magick while simultaneously enabling them in their journey of study and enlightenment. When necessary, it also tracks down and captures those arcanists who have gone rogue or violated the arcane laws, and in certain cases, turns them in to be subject to Royal authorities for punishment.
Headquarters
The Incantrium makes its home in Capvering Hold, a complex located in the Military District of the city of Morvista, the capital of the Grand Commonwealth. It is there that the leaders and administrators of the organisation meet and work. Here one also finds various classrooms, laboratories, and other facilities for use by members.
Leadership
The leadership of the Incantrium is invested in a body known as the Arcane Council, which is responsible for overseeing and regulating all business. It's membership consists of nine men and women, all powerful and accomplished master arcanists, with long records of service and discipline. They are charged to both serve as the stewards of Magick and its traditions, to represent it honorably to the mundane peoples of the Commonwealth, and to ensure its responsible use.
The leader of the Council, and by extension the entire Incantrium, is known by the title of Archmagister (or Archmagistra if female). This individual is recognized as the most senior member, and as the most prominent and powerful arcanist of the guild. They may act unilaterally or in concert with the Council as matters require, and ultimately have final say on all issues within the ranks of the organisation. Generally, however, collaboration with the Council, and maintaining respect for its views and directives, helps to preserve and ensure the smooth transaction of all necessary business. The current leader of the Incantrium is Archmagistra Violette Humilio.
Branches
Every major city across the Commonwealth is home to a local branch of the Incantrium, commonly referred to as a chapter hall. These halls serve as places for members who are abroad to receive support in the form of lodging, food, resupply and healing (if needed). They also offer their own libraries of books and scrolls for the use of members, and also have alchemy and enchantment services. Each of these halls is led by a master arcanist known as a factor.

The Inquisitor is the name given by mortals to an entity often believed to be one of the Watchers, a small group comprised of the most powerful of the Immortals who serve the Circle Celestial. According to what few instances exist of his appearance, he is said to be "the one Immortal the Gods will send when it is time to weigh a matter most somberly, granting it one final opportunity at reconciliation, before its judgment is handed down".

Juliora Galienno - born 4924 - is the reigning High Queen of the Grand Commonwealth, and the forty-third High Sovereign to sit upon the Sapphire Throne. She is a member of the House of Galienno, the ruling dynasty of the Commonwealth, and has reigned since 4954.
Her full, formal style is “Her Most Excellent Majesty Juliora of the House of Galienno, by the Grace of the Gods, High Queen of the Grand Commonwealth, Fount of Law and Justice, Protector of the Common Good, Defender of the Holy Faith, and Mistress of the Knightly Orders.”
History
She was born in 4924, the eldest and only daughter out of four children to High King Valen III. On Midsummers Eve in 4942, she married Sir Fernos Prelius, a Knight of the Lion, who is three years her senior. They have been married ever since and have three sons, two daughters, seven grandsons, four granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. Sir Fernos became Lord, and later Prince Consort when Juliora succeeded her father. She received her education during her apprenticeship with the Incantrium, and has since risen to the rank of master arcanist. Her eldest grandson, Prince Royal Leoric, is her chosen heir apparent.
Reputation
In her forty-one years in power, Juliora has established a reputation as a firm and just woman, who seeks to govern the Commonwealth in accordance with due and honorable law and to ensure that her judgments and proclamations are fair and even. While she is renowned for her mercy and her patience, she is also known to be gifted of a spectacular temper and is capable of great anger if she finds incompetence, malfeasance or abuse of Royal power and assets in her name. Under her reign, the State is respected for the efficiency with which it operates.
Long respected as a cunning and capable diplomat, Juliora is equally skilled at manipulating affairs from behind the scenes and play varying interests of foreign powers and internal groups against one another to the Commonwealth’s advantage. Her diplomacy and manipulations alike have continued the stability of the continent and helped to preserve the political balance. She is gifted of a sharp, dry wit and a wry sense of humor, with a penchant for biting sarcasm when the mood strikes her.
Likewise, while considered just and merciful, Juliora also has built a reputation for being decisive, capable of harsh action whenever she feels it necessary. It is said that while she never has served in a military capacity, she has the will of a seasoned general and the competent style of a long-serving administrator. She has suppressed several conspiracies against the Commonwealth, and has likewise put down numerous disputes and other internal troubles between various opposed groups vying against one another for the favour of the State. Even the most experienced nobles and battle-hardened generals rightly fear her displeasure.
Among the many high sovereigns that have led the Grand Commonwealth, Juliora is considered one of the greatest.
Trivia
* She stands five feet, six inches tall.
* Her once sandy brown hair is now heavily streaked with gray, and her eyes are pale green. In darkness or low light, her eyes will glow softly, an indication of her having passed the Second Seal arcanist trials.
* She is a master arcanist.
* She is the third-longest reigning leader in Grand Commonwealth history.

Lenvani - also known as the Creator or as the the Divine - is the deity central to the faith of the Church of Lumini. His name in the ancient tongue means "Infinite Light".

Lenvani is considered the omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient and benevolent deity responsible for the creation of the everything and beyond whose collective will guides and controls all things. During the Century of Tumult, he appeared to several men and women. His universal symbol is a golden sun or a burst of light rays known as the Divine Solar.
He is also referred to as His Brilliance or as the Maker. Followers of the faith are known as Luminians.
Divinity
Rationalization
"How then can a relation be represented between the Divine and what is other than the Divine when there is no notion comprising in any respect both of the two, inasmuch as existence is, in our opinion, affirmed of Him, may He be exalted, and of what is other than He merely by way of absolute equivocation. There is, in truth, no relation in any respect between the Divine and any of His creatures." - Proctor E. Hithire, 1117
According to official Church doctrine, the only aspect of the Divine which can be predicated is that He exists. Beyond this, it is impossible to comprehend His infinite nature.
One Voice, One Divine, One Law
Luminianism is based on a strict interpretation of the scrolls. This doctrine expresses the belief in a natural order warded by the power and grace of the Divine. The statement par excellence in terms of defining the Creator is within the Codex Divinicus -
"Hear O Creation, for His Brilliance is our Divine Guide, for He stands unique and alone".
Lenvani is conceived of as eternal, with no beginning or end. He is the creator of the universe, who shaped its laws and its orderly design, and the source of morality. He has the power to intervene in the world. His name thus corresponds to an actual ontological reality, and is not merely a projection of the mortal psyche. A scholar in the Tenth Century once described Lenvani in this fashion: "The foundation of all foundations and the pillar of wisdom is to know that there is a Divine who brought into being all existence. All the beings of the heavens, the earth, and what is between them came into existence only from the truth of His Being."
Since all of existence emanates from Lenvani, whose ultimate existence is not dependent on anything else, some Luminian sages perceive Him as interpenetrating the universe, which itself has been thought to be a manifestation of His existence. The Codex Divinicus and classical prelacy literature affirm theism and reject deism.
Omnipotence
The belief in Lenvani's omnipotence is rooted in the Codex Divinicus -
* "Why did she laugh, and say 'Shall I indeed bear a child now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the Divine?"
* “Attribute to the Divine all glory and power."
And, in a poignant expression of His eternal Presence, as went the discussion between the grieving Saint Octieve and the Creator at their first meeting,
* "Why now....why not earlier? All this time....where have you been...? '"
* "I have always been here..."
Most apostolic works also present Lenvani as having the properties of omnipotence, omniscience and omnibenevolence. This is the primary way that Luminians view the Divine and His state of Being.
Interrelation w/ Mortals
Most classical philosophers view the Creator as personal, meaning that people have a relationship with the Divine and vice versa. Several of the prayers in the Directorium portrays the Divine as caring about mortals in much the same way that mortals care about the Divine.
According to the teachings of the faith, people's actions do not have the ability to affect the Divine positively or negatively. The Codex Divinicus states -
"Gaze at the heavens and see, and view the skies, which are higher than you. Were you to sin, how do you harm His Brilliance, and if your transgressions are many, what do you do to Him? If you are righteous, what do you give Him? Or what does He take from your hand? Your wickedness affects a person like yourself, and your righteousness a child of humanity."
Any belief that an intermediary between humanity and the Divine could be used, whether necessary or even optional, has always been considered heretical. The scholar wrote further that "The Creator is the only one we may serve and praise....We may not act in this way toward anything beneath His Brilliance, whether it be an angel, a star, or one of the elements.....There are no intermediaries between us and the Divine. All our prayers should be directed towards Him; nothing else should even be considered."
Nature
Lenvani is non-physical, non-corporeal, and eternal. A corollary belief is that He is utterly unlike mortals, and can in no way be considered anthropomorphic. All statements in the Codex Divinicus and in scholastic literature which use anthropomorphism are held to be linguistic conceits or metaphors, as it would otherwise have been impossible to talk about the Creator at all.
It was not until the dark period in history remembered as the Century of Tumult that the Creator appeared on this plane, as an ageless, powerful and youthful man clad in magnificent armor of divine perfection, whose presence brought with it "its own natural sunlight and moonlight, as if the magnificence of the heavens were focused on this individual and yet continued as normal". This image represents him in the statuary used in Luminian chapels and private sanctuaries. His appearance during these visits is believed to have been because of the necessity of giving mortals something their minds would understand, as to look upon the true Presence of Divinity would be to submit to instantaneous judgment and death, but also to demonstrate the glory at His command.
Appearance
When the Creator reached out to the Prophets during the Century of Tumult, he appeared in the form the faith now ascribes him. The form of this manifestation was described thus by Saint Praxis -
"His manifestation was that of a towering, powerfully built and majestic man who appeared perhaps mid-30s in age, clad in burnished golden armor that gleamed with a soft light that had no source. His helmet concealed His features when donned, but He removed it to reveal a face that was strong but patient in its visage. His hair was short but thick, and a flawless white. His eyes were brilliant golden-white and glowed with a depth that defied the infinite. He had two great wings of pure divine flame, and spoke with a voice that followed its echo, instead of the opposite.
I was at once terrified and in awe, felt grossly unworthy beyond words and yet felt safe beyond description. The light which came from Him surrounded me, suffused me, gave me comfort in its terrible power. I could but be silent and tremble in the awesome Presence before me. For I knew...
...that I stood in the Presence of the Master of all Creation."

Leoric, Prince Royal - properly Leoric Galienno, born 4963 CE - is the eldest grandchild and heir apparent of High Queen Juliora of the Grand Commonwealth. He is also a Knight of the Scarlet Banner, a veteran field commander, an accomplished battlecaster, and a rising figure in the society and politics of the Commonwealth. He is formally known as His Royal Highness, Leoric of the House of Galienno, Prince of Beverneau.
History
Early Life
Prince Leoric was born in 4963, himself the eldest son of Juliora's firstborn son. He has a brother and two sisters younger than him. His siblings and family, as well as his closest friends, all call him "Leo". His father died in 4993 after a protracted illness, and he was named heir as a result.
The young prince grew up within the apartments of Arvendon Palace, and was educated by the magisters of the Incantrium, and also studied under the professors at the University of Roseminster, immediately prior to joining the military. Thought of as a natural swordsman since he was a boy, he combined that talent with his magickal skill in combat situations frequently during his years of military service. Those familiar with his combat style describe him as not so much a battle caster as a "blade caster", but even without a traditional weapon in hand, he is a powerful and accomplished arcanist, more than able to hold his own, having proven such on several occasions.
The day after his eighteenth birthday, he married his long time sweetheart, Filippia Zardro, the daughter of Sir Agostino Zardro of Millpost, who had been a military officer for many years and whose family operates the Zardro Wineries, which produce the luxury Almerry wines. The couple has three children, all sons - Geland (born 4983), Durinius (born 4985) and Pavio (born 4988). Since attaining his majority, he has been an avid big game hunter and has a deep love for reading and collecting books.
Military Service
Prince Leoric entered the Grand Army, aged eighteen years, and would go on to serve a twelve-year term. He qualified with swords, daggers, and bows, and also earned his battlecaster certifications. During his time in uniform, he successfully put down an anarchist movement in Delatha, crushed the burgeoning Melezenti pirates and their stronghold on the Ivory Coast, and suppressed a trade war between Commonwealth guilds and the merchant princes of the Far Isles. By the time he stood down from active duty, he had achieved the rank of brigadier, and had received several commendations.
Post Military
Since departure from active military service, Prince Leoric has shifted his time and attentions to supporting the work of the ministers and generals, and has also taken part in several diplomatic initiatives. He likewise maintains a regular presence in the halls of state. On many occasions, he can be seen representing his grandmother at various events and functions across the Commonwealth. With Juliora in her seventy-first year, it is no secret that she is quietly grooming him to become the next leader, and everywhere he goes, he is accompanied by two members of the College of Docents.
Because of his status, Prince Leoric makes his primary residence at Beverneau Palace, a palatial estate 50 leagues west of Morvista. Since his involvement in Grand Ministry affairs has increased considerably upon becoming heir apparent, however, he maintains rooms in Arvendon Palace where he resides all but three months of the year. He also maintains an apartment within the command quarters at Fort Garring, the largest base of the Grand Army.
Trivia
* He stands six feet, four inches tall.
* His hair is sandy brown, a trait passed down through the Galienno line.
* He is an adept arcanist.
* His eyes are pale blue, and glow softly in low light or dark surroundings. This is an indication that he has passed the Second Seal arcanist trials, in a ritual known as the "Tapping of the Arcane Source".

The Leviathan - also known as the Dragon of the Abyss - is a legendary sea creature that lives within the Zomorah Abyssal of the Eastern (Patronic) Ocean.
When the Abyssal was first sounded by a high elven ship whose name the great depths now carry, ships would sail over the region with little cause for concern. Almost twenty years after, however, in the year 490 ofthe great beast was sighted for the first time when it attacked a pair of ships that were scouting the region. It is said to have the features and physical appearance of an immense sea serpent but with the head of a dragon. Its head and body have several long, shimmering fins of a translucent reddish-blue coloration.
No one is certain of the origins of the creature, but a widely held theory is that it is likely a Precursor creation, crafted for a specific - though unknown - purpose. Some say it was created by the Precursors to safeguard the great city Ionorath, which is rumored to sit at the bottom of the Abyssal after being left there by its builders when they left Arginium. To date, it is also believed that this is the only extant creature of this type, as no other sightings have ever been made beyond the Abyssal.

Magick is the common name for the mystical abilities given to those who can naturally sense the arcane energies of the world and manipulate said energies for a variety of purposes. These energies, when channeled in specific ways, are wielded to a wide array of purposes. Those capable of wielding Magick - known as "having the Gift" - are born, and cannot be "made". The arts of practicing Magick are also known as spellcraft.
Overview
At some point in their youth, a child with this natural talent will have their power physically manifest. Reports vary as to the manner in which this manifestation takes place - a burst of energy knocks every nearby loose object to the floor, or said loose objects start floating in midair suddenly, and so forth. This event is known as an "Unbinding" and signals that the child's powers have awakened. The unique energy signature this event creates is sensed by nearby arcanists who will locate and identify the child that they may approach the family and discuss their prospective future.
Wielders of Magick are known as arcanists. Additionally, other titles and honorifics exist for accomplished arcanists. The title of magister (or magistra if they are female) is used to refer to any arcanist who has successfully completed their apprentice's trials. Informally trained arcanists are referred to as hedge casters, a term of derision among properly trained arcanists.
It is common practice for arcanists throughout the history of the Continent to be members in good standing of whatever arcane order is prominent in that period. For example, all arcanists within the Grand Commonwealth are required to remain in good standing with the Incantrium.
Rank
All arcanists fall into one of four classifications of rank, which indicates their standing and experience -
* Masters are the teachers and mentors of all younger students and arcanists who continue to walk the path of greater knowledge and understanding of magick and its nuances. They are likewise the leaders and administrators of the arcane world. Likewise, they are the ones who instruct apprentices during their training and in advanced courses. This is the highest rank any member of an order can achieve, and only one in every 100 adepts will ever attain it.
* Adepts are those journeymen who have passed the demanding and dangerous Second Seal trials. These arcanists are highly accomplished and skilled, and are powerful emissaries of their order and the arcane arts. Only one in ten arcanist journeymen will ever attain this rank. Arcanists of this rank are sent to investigate and address the most critical - and potentially sensitive - situations.
* Journeymen are all arcanists who complete their apprenticeship and pass the First Seal trials. Those of this rank make up the vast majority of arcanists. While they may not be as powerful as adepts or masters, they are nevertheless accomplished and competent arcanists, and are more than capable of handling a vast array of tasks and situations. Whenever arcanists are called upon to assist with a situation by the authorities or private organizations, these are the people most often sent.
* Apprentices are newly-inducted arcanists, fresh to the magick traditions of the world and only just starting their arcane journey. They have been accepted for membership after experiencing their Unbinding and completing a series of initiatory trials. They will spend ten years in this rank, attending a range of classes and hands on lessons to learn their craft and hone their skills. Also during this period, simultaneous with their various tests and challenges, they will also perform a range of tasks from assisting with cleaning and cooking to gathering herbs and alchemical ingredients, as part of being taught the importance of patience, discipline, and focus, traits anyone who would learn the arcane arts must possess.
The Ambience
The Ambience - also known as the Subliminal Veil - is the name by which the magickal currents of Arginium are known. These energies suffuse the mortal plane and allow the wielding of magick. Those who are able to sense and manipulate these energies have "the Gift".
The energy of the Ambience presents itself to those with the gift for spellcraft in different ways - some see unusual colors, some hear a soft humming, some see "ripples" in the air which no other can - but all draw upon it and its energies flow in response to their manipulations.
The natural flows of the Ambience manifest occasionally in the form of mana wells - points where the flows burst to the surface of Arginium and appear as shimmering bodies of bluish-white energy that behave as water would. Of these, the most famous is the Harmonious Font.

Mana wells are an uncommon occurrence where the powerful currents of the Ambience burst to the surface and manifest as "lakes" of bluish-white energy that behaves as if it were water. These confluences are the singularly most potent manifestations of the magicks of the plane. Some mana wells are larger and more powerful in terms of their "resonance" within the Ambience, as the larger a mana well is the more considerable that "rattle" they produce within the arcane currents of the land. These are known as "great wells", whereas all others are known simply as "lesser wells".
The two best known mana wells are the Harmonious Font, which is the single largest ever to be discovered, and is said to be located somewhere within Morvista. The other, and second largest, is the Infinite Well, now more commonly known as the Howling Well - which is located near the heart of the Vrucciaven Wastes and has lain shattered since the end of the Hundred States period. A third great well known as the Verdant Source can be found in the depths of Jandol Swamp in the Westlands, and is believed to have been drawn upon by the ancient Vai. To modern times, however, it has not been known to have been seen by any explorer, and its current condition is likewise not precisely known.

Marcai Ormellian, remembered by history as Marcai the Spellwright - born TBD CE, died TBD CE - was the founder and first leader of the Incantrium. After guiding the creation of the guild, he would lead it for over a century. During his tenure, he helped shape the central methods and traditions that continue to mold the arcane rites and practices of modern times, and would likewise influence the common establishment of the arcane orders as they are known in modern times.
He was born in the city of Eastgate.
After his 109 years as leader of the order, Ormellian died aged 173 years and his body was placed within the Tower of Aranoth, north of Basinford. There have been many scholars since who believe he did not actually die, but rather unlocked the secret of immortality and was granted the ability to wander the land in times of need as a sort of spirit guardian of the arcane balance. His body, in repose at Aranoth, is merely "asleep". Many stories in the intervening centuries since last he walked among his fellow arcanists say his spirit has been seen and spoken with by several individuals. It is also said that each High Magister is able to summon him occasionally, for brief periods, for purposes of gaining counsel.
Lord Ormellian left behind several incredibly powerful magickal artifacts known collectively as the Master's Tools. These items are jealously guarded by the Incantrium, and several have been the target of theft attempts over the centuries.

Morvista is the capital city of the Grand Commonwealth. It is located in Apparona, on the western shore of Grammiron Bay at the mouth of the Waydon River Delta. It is one of the largest major cities on the Continent, and one of only three major cities whose foundations predate the Hundred States Era. The metropolis is renowned as one of the most elegant and unique cities in the world. Because of its age, it is known as "the Eternal City".
Government
History
Economy
Morvista is one of the major ports on the Grammiron, and a huge variety of trade goods flowed through the city. The city primarily exports metal goods, finished leather goods, and various luxury goods such as spices, silk and fresh fruit. Trade is overseen by various companies, such as the Royal Trading Company and the Golden Crest Trading Company.
Religion
The vast majority of the city's religious populace is of the Luminianite faith.
Places of Interest
Arvendon Palace, Assemblage Hall, the Arsenal, Capvering Hold, Via Popula, Civic Gardens, Monument Plaza, Great Arcade, Royal Philharmonic Hall, Royal Opera House, Royal Museum of Antiquities, Crystal Falls
Also located here are Capvering Hold, headquarters of the Incantrium, and Gatterlen Keep, the city prison. Gatterlen is maintained by a specialized military constabulary force.
This neighborhood is well known for the grand vista it grants to those who enter the capital via ship. Those who travel from the Port District to areas towards the center or other districts pass over the man-made waterfalls of the great promenade known as Crystal Falls, which is one of the wealthiest and most luxurious parts of the city. Here, buildings surround a long rectangular area where the various man-made lakes and ponds of the district all drain into a greater body of water at the bottom of the rectangular area via twenty-four cascading waterfalls that drop nearly one hundred feet. The facings of the Falls are themselves a variety of shops and restaurants, with visitors able to go to the lake the falls empty into at the bottom, known as the Mirror.
Defenses
Aside from a full legion of Army troops and the professional peacekeepers of the City Watch, it is said that the capital has formidable defenses which not obvious to the naked eye. These are widely believed to be a combination of magickal, mundane and technological systems. There is also the added defense provided by the large number of magi and independent but pro-Royalist militant groups.

Orcs are one of the four civilized races native to Arginium.
Overview
History
Orcs are the youngest of the four civilised races of the Continent, though their true origins are still shrouded in mystery. There are two legends on orcish origins which remain the most prevalent in the centuries since they first walked continental soil. The first says that they are the product of a curse placed upon a group of elves as punishment from the ancestors, for a variety of sins ranging from profligacy to blasphemous practices. The other legend suggests the orcs were the product of twisted experiments conducted by the arcanists of the now-illegal society known as the Pale Tower, who were said to have experimented upon prisoners of the servitor races while under the influence of Anathema.
The Second Age was not kind to the orcs, as they were either abused or ignored by the elves, by and large. The indifference of their elven masters towards the orcs has led to centuries of enmity between the two races, though this has mellowed some in recent times, as the orcs have come to firmly believe that the collapse of Delthoridan and the decimation of the elven population are the just retribution of the Gods for their cruelty. The inclusive nature of Commonwealth society and the freedom the orcs enjoy in travel, work, and life in general are considered fair compensation for their past mistreatment. It is estimated in current year that approximately 10% of the population of the Grand Commonwealth is orcish.
Description
Orcs vary in height and build. They are shorter than elves but taller than humans on average, and are more muscular and solidly built than those two races. Males average between 5'10" and 6'5" in height and mass between 210 and 260 pounds, depending on height. Females average between 5'6" and 5'10" in height and mass between 170 and 200 pounds, depending on height. Their hair is universally black, and always straight, and their eyes are universally a coppery reddish colour. Their skin is varying shades of green.
Magick ability in orcs is extremely rare, with only 1 in 10,000 being born with the ability to wield it. Magick is partly respected and partly feared in orcish society, but those who wield magick tend to be advisers to the matriarchs or serve in some capacity with the Commonwealth itself. Orcs, on average, live upwards of 65 years.
Reputation
Orcs are well known as fierce warriors, and this tendency for aggressiveness and violence makes them well-suited for service in the Grand Army or in the provincial militias. Their physical resilience makes them likewise amply suited for duty in any of the Army’s subunits. Orcs have a natural talent with explosives and blackpowder, thus orcs are typical among the Royal Engineers.
The fierce fighting spirit of the orcs means some among them, finding a calmer life unappealing, turn to other pursuits, such as piracy and mercenary work. Indeed, orcs are the most common sight aboard pirate ships that prowl the Summer Sea, and some ships have entirely orcish crews. Likewise, they are typical members of mercenary companies, such as the Red Blades and the Black Sashes.
Despite their fiercely independent nature, the vast majority of Orcs are loyal to the Commonwealth, and the clan matriarchs are said to hold a respect born of subtle fear for the reigning High Queen, Juliora, for her strict, no-nonsense leadership style and her legendary temper of which "any Orc would be proud". Many refer to her in their language as ro'hai kanzal, or "Queen of Steel". Her grandson and heir apparent, Prince Royal Leoric, is called the ro'kal tondo, or "Prince of Storms", for his magickal abilities in combat.
Society
A matriarchal system governs the orcish clans. This system places the leadership of the clans, which are loosely familial but see adoptions of worthy orcs into their ranks. In some situations, one clan can absorb the remnants of another at the conclusion of a clan dispute. Open clan war is forbidden by Commonwealth law, but means for following the other strictures of the mugorim, or honour code, are inculcated in the legal code of the Commonwealth.
Most orcs who are religious are followers of the Communion of the Circle, the state faith of the Commonwealth. Some still follow the ancient, militant tradition of the Gholorz Garan'do, a religion which worships a trinity of exclusively orcish gods representing fortune, death, and war.
Their largest settlement is the city of Rhokkolu (population 15,300), located in the lower Northlands.

The Ousni are a loosely organised cult which worships the demonic forces of Anathema. While it has existed for millennia, the cult has only survived numerous purges and inquisition hunts thanks to its intensive efforts at secrecy. Simliarly, the cult actively encourages the common belief of most Commonwealthers that the Ousni were largely destroyed thousands of years ago, in retaliation for the murder of the Exemplar Dionel, as a further safeguard. While a shadow of the strength they were centuries ago, the organisation remains diametrically opposed to the Church of the Circle, and the religion they promote. Church examiners continue to track their movements, exposing and destroying them whenever possible, in an ongoing secret conflict most are blissfully unaware of.
In the elven language, ousni is one part of the term "ousni elthedren" which means "dark wanderers". This name reflects the cult's reverence for the powers of darkness, and the fact that it was originally founded by elves.

Silverport - also known as the City of Ships - was one of the great cities of Arginium and a thriving, prosperous hub of trade and commerce. With a population of nearly twenty thousand, it was one of the single largest metropolises of the period.
Late one evening in the year 2722, the city was destroyed on command of the Gods, who sent several Immortals down to carry out Their judgment against it and its people. Having been corrupted over several years by the demonic influences of a profane cult that worshipped Anathema, the city had fallen into darkness and become a haven of corruption and wickedness. Several Circle prelates had been sent to warn the city of the danger they were in, but these emissaries were either savagely beaten and left for dead on the road outside the city, or, in one case, brutally murdered and strung up over the main gates. Ultimately, it is said that the Inquisitor, one of the most powerful of the Immortals, walked unseen among the denizens of the city in its final days to observe its depravity and corruption before it was condemned to annihilation.
The storm was described in accounts of the time as one that "defied all possible description". On what had been said to have been "a perfectly calm evening, without a cloud in the sky, there arose - within a mere instant - ferocious winds and churning seas like nothing before seen" that quickly endangered the entire city. When citizens attempted to escape, they found the city gates sealed and unable to be opened. Surviving descriptions by people trapped outside the city report seeing "several luminous beings, riding the merciless winds and waves as they crushed the city beneath their fury". The storm raged as winds and waves tore apart the once majestic spires of the city and reduced its great walls and docks to rubble. Untold thousands of lives were lost when whole neighborhoods of the city were swept out to sea. Once the city was utterly eradicated, the storm faded as quickly as it had come.
Since its destruction, the ruins of Silverport have remained untouched by the fearful citizens of the region, and treasure hunters attempting to pick through the ruins are strongly dissuaded, sometimes by force. It is against Commonwealth law to enter the ruins, or to take anything from them. The remains of the city have become one great tomb, a monument to mortal folly...and a warning against provoking the wrath of the Gods.

The University of Roseminster is the most well-known institution of higher learning in the Grand Commonwealth. Located in the city of Roseminster in Baldon Province, in the east-central Midlands, it is where the children of noble families, as well as those of well-connected merchant families, are sent to study the subjects of import to one who seeks a higher status through greater intellectual pursuits.
Classes at the university are taught by instructors known as professors. Every instructor is a previous graduate, who will have spent several years in further research and study before coming to Roseminster to teach, typically having been invited by the faculty to do so. While every instructor is at least fairly well-versed in each of the offered subjects, they will typically specialise in one or two.
Every attendee of Roseminster pursues their studies according to a traditional schedule which consists of two three-year terms. Their term is spent studying grammar, logic, rhetoric, and philosophy. Their second term focuses on arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. Once these two terms are completed, they can graduate - or they may progress even further - and study either law or medicine. Only those who satisfactorily complete all three terms may be referred to by the honourific of "doctor". These accomplished individuals go on to fulfill a variety important roles in communities across the Commonwealth.

Violette Humilio - born 4915 CE - is a human serving High Magistra of the Incantrium, the arcane guild chartered by the Grand Commonwealth and the Eastlands. In this capacity, she is considered the foremost voice of the magick affairs of the Commonwealth. She has served as leader of the guild since 4973 CE.
Lady Humilio is considered one of the prominent citizens of the Grand Commonwealth, and one of the most powerful arcanists alive. Known for being firm, no-nonsense and deeply traditional, she is nevertheless highly respected and popular within the guild. She is known to show a maternal affection - if somewhat gruff and "tough love" in its manner - towards all members.
Lady Humilio is a native of Egredore, born and raised in a small village on the shores of Grammiron Bay. She has been part of the Incantrium since 4920, when she started her initial arcane education, and was made an adept arcanist in 4944.
She stands five feet, five inches tall and has wizened features, with a prominent nose and chin. She wears her wavy, silvery gray hair halfway down her back. She wears flowing robes of a deep cobalt blue fabric that some describe as "appearing to have been cut from the night sky itself" for the sparkling starry patterns woven into it. She keeps a pair of half-moon pince-nez optics on a red silk ribbon around her neck that are said to have numerous enchantments on them. On her belt she has an arcanist's wand and an enchanted silver dagger.
Lady Humilio is a close friend of High Queen Juliora, and was partly responsible for the arcane education of several of her children and grandchildren, most notably Prince Royal Leoric, her eldest grandchild.
OOC - To imagine Lady Humilio's voice, think of Nanny McPhee. This includes the tendency to answer questions and statements with "Mmm."

The Way of the Ancestors - known in the Elven tongue as Eth Ivasaar - is the religion of the Elven people.
Overview
Central View
Eth Ivasaar is centered around the remembrance and worship of honoured ancestors, who hold a place of reverence in Elven society, but are not worshiped by the majority. In most cases, these are elves who were famous philosophers, military leaders, healers, or other prominent figures. The belief teaches that the Ancestors, watching over them from the afterlife, protecting their society and their people, and offering subtle guidance in the form of various signs or portents, as well as by acting on the conscience of the believer.
Followers begin and end each day with a meditation known as Avirinza, which is fifteen minutes of silent communion with the Ancestors. Once a year, on All Spirits Day, believers read the names of these ancestors aloud, among the gathered adherents.
Holy Texts
Eth Ivasaar has only one holy text - the Book of Remembrance, which records the names of the Ancestors the religion honours. It has within it, at present date, nearly one thousand Ancestors.
Structure
The faith maintains several small temples scattered throughout the Commonwealth where Elves who maintain the tradition may go to commune with the Ancestors, each of which is maintained by a single priest and a small group of acolytes. They maintain incense burners and ritual braziers used for a variety of ceremonies. At the Temple of the Ancestors in the Elven home city of Ormindy Do, a group of priests maintain the complex which has statues of the most honoured among the Ancestors.
Status
Few elves in modern time follow Eth Ivasaar, and it is considered a "fading faith" among most of their kind. Because it is a minority religion, it is protected by Commonwealth law, and it maintains a neutral outlook towards other religions. Because it is not a militant faith, Eth Ivasaar is not looked upon with as much caution as are the orcish beliefs of the Gholorz Garan'do.

The Zomorah Abyssal - also known as the Tenebrous Deep - is the single deepest known point of the seas around Arginium. Despite its being hidden at the bottom of the Eastern (Patronic) Ocean, it is considered both a prominent feature and a prominent location. It is located north of the Codus Islands, 181 leagues south of the Great Lighthouse.
The Abyssal is a great basin-shaped region at the bottom of the Great Sea measuring roughly 150 leagues in diameter, that has an average depth at its bottom of 2.91 leagues (8.75 miles). A single portion of the Abyssal near the center of its northeastern quadrant dips even deeper to 3.13 leagues (9.4 miles). It was first sounded by elven magisters aboard a ship named the Zomorah over 3,000 years ago.
Commonly called the "darkest place in the seas", the Zomorah is an area that most ships tend to avoid, as it is whispered that terrible things dwell within its lightless depths. The first report of the Leviathan, also called the Dragon of the Abyss, was made roughly a century after the first sounding. This legendary beast tolerates few if any to pass over its home waters. Since ancient times it has been rumored - though unproven as of current date - that an ancient Precursor city once floated on the waters above the Abyssal that was capable of sinking below the waves. Legend also claims when they departed Arginium, the Precursors sent the city to the bottom to protect the fantastic secrets it held. To this day, according to the stories, the city known as Ionorath is said to rest at the bottom of the Abyssal, somewhere near its precise center.
